How to become a press photographer in the UK
Most press photographers build their careers through a strong portfolio of published news pictures, often starting with local papers, agencies or freelance work. Formal routes include photography or journalism degrees, the NCTJ Diploma with a photography elective, and photography apprenticeships. Professional news photographers can later apply for the UK Press Card through the BPPA or NUJ.
This guide covers training, equipment, portfolio, legal basics and how to get your first commissions – plus the press card options for photographers.
